Desert Landscape
I’m a fan of Eyvind Earl’s illustration style and having grown up in Arizona I’m always sentimental about any desert landscape. I created this painting of desert florals with the Eyvind Earl illustration style.

Research
When researching this landscape I looked at Arizona, Wyoming, Nebraska and California. The rock formations varied slightly from each state and I wanted to mix things up with my painting.
I explored different plants to get ideas for the focal point of the scene, desert flowers.
Plant Designs
While I explored different thumbnail options I also started playing with the plant designs. The goal was to keep the plants angular to mimic the artist style.
Thumbnails
Trying out different shapes and forms.
Linework exploration
With my initial thumbnail designs I chose 4 designs to push further and show line mass.
Linework refined
My final choice was design #4. I went back over the design and cleaned everything up to clarify what the drawing is. I also added final details of the plant designs.
Value studies
After finalizing the design and drawings I completed 2 value studies to figure out the dusk and night version of the painting. Every step I take on completing this painting is building up to the final design.
Color comps
I played around with color comps for both scenes. In these comps I played around with color variations. The night scene was more challenging to design because of the limited values across the image.
Final images
Here are the final images once again. I like to do a day and night scene of any background painting I do. This gives an art director options and can help speed up the animation pipeline.
